The Manner Original Neopolitan Wafer has been around for more than 100 years. Treat yourself to a short, riveting insight into the development of the Manner wafer over the decades!
The wafer was first mentioned in 1898 in the Manner catalogue and was called the "Neopolitan Wafer No 239". The nuts for the filling, which is made of sugar, hazelnuts, coconut oil and cocoa powder came from the Naples area. The size of 49 x 17 x 17 mm was made to be bite-sized and the wafer had four layers of filling between five layers of wafer. This size and the basic recipe have been kept till today.
Originally the wafers were packed in boxes which had a pink paper ribbon around them and later the goods were delivered in tins to the traders. In 1924 Manner wafers were offered in the familiar two rows by five rows pack, however they were still sold in a folding box.
The aluminium foil pack was introduced in 1949, the airproof pack with its tear strip in the 1960s. From then on this article became the most successful and the best-selling of the range of products. The Manner wafer packaging counts as one of the Austrian "design classics" and is always represented in exhibitions about this topic.
In 1898 the founder of Manner, Josef Manner I, invented the Manner Original Neapolitan Wafers:
five layers of crispy paper-thin wafer filled with four layers of the finest hazelnut-chocolate-cream. In its 110-year history, the Manner wafer has been enjoyed by people on many occasions.
The Manner Original Neapolitan Wafer is the unbeaten classic amongst wafers and is offered not only in its familiar square packaging and the giant pack of 18 packets of Manner wafers, but also in a mini-pack and as a bar - the bar being on a secret mission, is also offered under the disguise of the "Secret Wafers".
